The Importance of Eating a Healthy Breakfast![]()
Eating a healthy breakfast is the best way to get your day off to a good start. The nutrients from a healthy breakfast rev up your metabolism, stabilizes blood sugar levels and supplies energy to your brain allowing you to start your day with clear, quick thinking. When you are asleep at night your body’s metabolism slows down. It does so because your body does not require as much energy when it is at rest. For a certain period after you wake up in the morning your body stays in this state of decreased metabolism or "fasting". Your first meal of the day breaks the fast, hence the name breakfast. If you do not eat anything in the morning your body stays in this state of reduced metabolism and so there is not enough energy for your normal daily routine. Research has shown that eating a healthy meal first thing in the morning increases your body’s production of leptin which is a hormone that suppresses appetite and so you will feel full. People who eat breakfast are more likely to get through the entire morning without feeling the need to grab a snack. There is another important reason for eating a nutritious breakfast; the energy from the meal fuels your brain. Certain studies have revealed that people who eat breakfast regularly outperform people who don't eat breakfast when they participated in tests and complex tasks. The secret to a healthy breakfast is to eat a balanced meal. This means eating carbohydrates, fiber, protein and healthy fats. Carbohydrates and fiber can come from vegetables, fruits, whole grains, whole wheat breads, certain cereals, oats and other grains. Proteins and healthy fat can come from eggs, low fat meat, beans or soy. It is best to avoid sugary cereals, syrups, white breads, pastas and pastries because they are quickly digested by your body and will unbalance your blood sugar levels which will leave you tired and hungry in only a few hours. Protein and fiber on the other hand will make you feel full for much longer. Eating a healthy breakfast is the most important thing you can do to get your day off to a good start. It will make you feel energized and ready to cope with the stress your day will bring.
