How to Develop Healthy Eating Habits For Children

Creating healthy eating habits for children begins at home at a very early age and involves a certain amount of self discipline. One of the most important things you can do as parents is to eat family meals sitting around a table. Take the time to get to know your children better and find out their likes and dislikes. Do not use meals times to argue with your children or scold them, meal times are for sharing and pleasant conversations. If meals times are unpleasant, your children will begin to associate healthy eating habits with stress and punishment.

As parents you need to be careful of the comments you make around the meal table. Comments such as "Hey! What's this pesky rabbit fodder doing on my plate?" are unlikely to foster an appreciation for salads or vegetables in your children, as they are quick to pick up on their parents likes and dislikes and will often copy them them.

Never use deserts or sweets as a reward for eating the main meal because your child will begin to associate meals as a form of punishment. Rather let you child choose from the meal items you have prepared but firmly explain that there will be nothing else to eat until the next meal time.

Let your child make food choices when shopping and allow them to help when preparing meals. Try to make it an educational experience. The more your child learns about healthy food, how it is grown and how it is prepared, the more likely they are to want to eat it, or at least taste it and continue eating the healthy food item it if they like it.

Don't place a lot of emphasis on your child only eating healthy food, your child needs to eat a certain amount of fat and sugar as they are important sources of energy. For example, eating ice cream is a favorite with most children which many parents will try to limit, but you can blend fruit and incorporate it into a home made ice cream for a tasty healthy desert.

Creating healthy eating habits for children should be a fun experience, not only for children but for the parents as well. Never force your child to eat healthy food, give them options and you will be surprised at the healthy choices they make when they don't feel threatened.
