If you allow your children to choose their own meals, chances are they will pick mostly unhealthy food. By preparing healthy meals for kids before hand, you control the options available to them. Children tend to be picky eaters, so the secret to ensuring your children eat properly is to prepare a fairly wide range of meal or snack options before hand and involve them in the process. Children tend to be a lot more active than adults and are still growing so they need carbohydrates for energy and protein for growing. Many school meals are decidedly unhealthy and you would be wise to prepare healthy packed lunches for your children instead, just don't spoil the meal by including candy or chocolate bars. When preparing healthy meals for your children, make sure you also include five portions of fruit or vegetables. If you have to, chop vegetables into small pieces and add them to sauces or to pizzas. Instead of ice cream use fruit and frozen fat free deserts. Be careful of preserved foods as the preservatives are often unhealthy. Another very effective way to get your children interested in eating healthy foods is to involve them in the process of preparing meals and snacks. Teach your children how to safely use the stove, toaster, microwave, blender and oven. Children who have basic cooking skills are far more likely to eat healthy food. Allow them to be creative; your appreciation of their culinary abilities will encourage them to continue cooking and eating healthy food. You can also involve them when you go shopping. Educate them on the nutritional value of different food items and then allow them to choose the ingredients for their balanced diet. It is important to encourage them from a very young age to select items such as whole wheat or bran breads because of the added fiber content, and to choose healthy sandwich fillings rather than syrupy jams. Preparing healthy meals for kids is not difficult, but it does take commitment and effort on your part, the more you involve your children in the process, the easier it will become until you reach the point where they naturally choose healthy meal options.
